Arizona is doing its best to make America look like a laughingstock when it comes to our elections, delaying the results from critical races in the state for days – or perhaps even weeks.(They swear they’ll have every ballot counted by Christmas)
The third most populated state, Florida, managed to count, tally and relay their election results the same day. We knew how Florida politicians faired before we knew states with lesser populations! But for some reason Arizona can’t seem to get it together and the whole country is STILL awaiting their results as they could determine the balance of power in Congress.
The Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors revealed that it will take them until at least “next week” to count a measly 400,000 ballots (Florida counted over 7.5 million in one night for reference).
While this number of ballots should take less than a day to count, Maricopa County appears to have just 6 people sitting around a table laughing it up as they count ballots one by one.
“The hand count audit has begun,” wrote Maricopa County’s election department on Twitter on Wednesday.
They added that it is “an important step in ensuring the accuracy of the 2022 General Election results.”
The reason behind the hand-count audit is to “compare the results of the original count to the hand count to assure that the tabulation equipment is working properly” and counting votes in an accurate manner, according to the Arizona secretary of state’s website.
On Tuesday, top Maricopa County officials stated that vote tabulating equipment had problems processing ballots. Later in the day, authorities blamed the problem on a “printer issue” after telling voters to place their completed ballots in a drop box.
County Supervisor Bill Gates (no, not that Bill Gates) said that roughly 7 percent of ballots that were cast on Election Day were put in drop boxes after the tabulators suffered problems.
“There is no perfect election. Yesterday was not a perfect election,” Gates said. “We will learn from it and do better.”
The disastrous process has received a flurry of criticism especially from Republicans who point out that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Katie Hobbs is actually the same person who oversees elections in the state – suggesting foul play may be involved.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) highlighted that Arizona’s slow pace was rather odd. “If Florida can count 7.5 million ballots in 5 hours how can it take days for some states to count less than 2 million?” Rubio questioned.
A member of Ron DeSantis’ campaign, Christina Pushaw, made a similar observation:
“While we wait on counting in other states, Florida (pop 22 million) had votes counted on election night… weeks after a Cat4/5 HURRICANE destroyed precincts across several counties!!! Thank you Sec of State @CordByrd, local officials & @GovRonDeSantis for election integrity laws!” she wrote.
Even Hobbs’ opponent, Republican rising star Kari Lake said, “It’s embarrassing the way elections are run in Arizona. This is why I’ve been sounding the alarm since 2020. Against the fake news saying, ‘you can’t question our elections, how dare you! You’re an election denier!’ You know what? This is why we’ve been questioning them.”
