Somewhere in America tonight, a working mom is staring at her empty fridge, wondering how to feed her kids because the Democrats refuse to reopen the government and after more than 30 days shutdown, the SNAP program ran out of money. Meanwhile, in California and New York, illegal aliens just might be getting taxpayer-funded grocery money — and their governors are fighting tooth and nail to keep it that way.
According to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, 21 blue states refused to prove they’re not handing out food stamps to people who aren’t paying taxes or even supposed to be in the country. Two of those states went even further — they sued the USDA for daring to even ask. Because nothing says “we’ve got nothing to hide” like lawyering up when someone asks to see the receipts.
“We told every state to send us their SNAP data so we could make sure illegal immigrants aren’t getting benefits meant for American families,” Rollins said. “Twenty-nine states stepped up. Twenty-one blue states refused — and two sued us for asking.”
Translation: red states still believe in the law. Blue states? They believe in sanctuary cities, open borders, and apparently, feeding the world on your dime.
The SNAP program — the one that just ran out of federal funding during this ongoing shutdown — is supposed to help low-income Americans buy food. Not Guatemalan nationals who snuck across the border last week. Not Venezuelan asylum shoppers waiting for a court date in 2029. Americans.
But according to a 2023 report from the Center for Immigration Studies, 59 percent of households headed by illegal aliens are receiving some form of welfare — including food assistance. That’s not a loophole. That’s a system-wide failure with a neon “open bar” sign blinking over every welfare office from Sacramento to Baltimore.
And now, as the USDA tries to ensure American taxpayers get the assistance they need, blue states are dragging their feet — or worse, throwing roadblocks in the way. Why? Power. Votes. Political theater. These governors aren’t protecting privacy; they’re protecting a voter base they hope one day becomes legal enough to check a ballot box.
Two states are suing the feds, claiming this verification effort violates privacy laws. Oh please. If the government can track your COVID booster status and read your Venmo transactions, it can probably find out if someone using a fake Social Security number is buying Frosted Flakes on taxpayer’s dime.
Let’s not forget: under current law, only U.S. citizens and certain qualified non-citizens are supposed to receive SNAP. But enforcement is handled by the states. So if your state thinks IDs are optional and border security is racist, don’t be surprised when your tax dollars end up feeding someone who’s never paid a dime into the system.
The USDA tried to do its job — to verify eligibility and protect taxpayer money. The pushback from blue states tells you everything you need to know about their priorities. It’s not about compassion. It’s about control.
So while American families scramble to fill their pantries, Democrats are more concerned with shielding bureaucratic secrets than serving the citizens who elected them. And the longer this shutdown drags on, the more it exposes a brutal truth: some states would rather starve their own people than stop feeding the world.
The question is, when the SNAP money finally comes back, who’s going to be first in line — and who’s going to be left behind?
