Joe Biden crawled out of his basement long enough to participate in the final presidential debate. He’d have been better off staying home and hiding. The candidates had the debate topics ahead of time, so Biden was able to memorize a half-dozen short speeches that offered no substance. Every speech that Biden delivered – and they were speeches – started off talking about the topic but then quickly steered into insulting Donald Trump. Trump landed plenty of blows, but rather than defeating Biden, he pulled off something even better: He got Biden to defeat himself with a stunning admission about plans for the oil industry.
A word does need to be said about debate moderator Kristen Welker of NBC News. She wasn’t as terrible as Chris Wallace of Fox News! Yeah, that’s kind of a low bar… but still, she cleared it. Despite writing biased softballs meant to benefit Joe Biden, and not allowing Trump to finish his answers several times, she turned out to be one of the best presidential debate moderators we’ve seen in years.
She didn’t shut down the discussion of Hunter Biden’s laptop and the Biden mafia’s business dealings in Ukraine, Russia and China. She even asked a follow-up question or two on that topic. The debate even started to veer into foreign policy a time or two – a topic that the debate commission wanted to avoid because it is Trump’s greatest strength. Welker got confused on the difference between a sanction and a tariff, which is pretty embarrassing.
But all in all, she wasn’t nearly as awful as many of the moderators we’ve seen in recent elections. Even Trump praised her briefly from the debate stage, for doing an unexpectedly good job. She didn’t have blood coming out of her, whatever, like what’s-her-name from four years ago. How is that person’s career going, by the way?
Let’s face it: Trump did not need to convince you or I to vote for him in the last debate. He needed to convince the remaining undecideds who haven’t been paying much attention to the election until just recently. It was also his last chance to reach out to nervous Democrats who are concerned about the radicals pulling Biden’s strings from behind the curtain. I think he succeeded.
One of the heaviest blows that Trump landed was highlighting that Biden has spent 47 years in public office and doesn’t have a record of accomplishment to brag about. Meanwhile, Trump in three-and-a-half years has been a wonder for our country.
400 miles of new wall on our southern border. 300 new judges confirmed to the federal courts, with Amy Coney Barrett set to join the Supreme Court on Monday. Prior to the coronavirus, median household incomes in America were up $6,500 per family. Tax cuts for 85% of Americans. Record low unemployment.
On inauguration day back in 2017, Barack Obama told Trump that he could expect a war with North Korea on his watch. Instead, relations have not been more stable with the “Hermit Kingdom” in any American’s lifetime. Watching Joe Biden stand up there and continuously call Kim Jong Un a “thug” made me want to vomit. If the Democrats steal this election, the permanent war party in Washington will have America’s best and brightest running off to play “world police” in more pointless, permanent wars.
Trump was professional and presidential, while Biden came across as a crusty old man with anger management issues, yelling at all of those damn kids to get off his lawn.
But the most remarkable moment came when the discussion turned to climate change, surprisingly. Trump smartly steered the discussion into energy and then finally pinned Biden down by asking him point-blank: “Would you close down the oil industry?”
Biden’s answer, which everyone in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas and the Gulf Coast states, West Coast states and Alaska needs to hear:
Even the moderator was stunned by that moment, stating, “Um, why would you do that?”
Biden then blathered about “transitioning” away from the oil, gas and fracking industries – meaning Biden would shut down millions of good-paying American jobs in an industry that makes America independent from the Middle East’s oil. President Trump got Joe Biden to cut his own throat with that statement. Well played!
Now it’s time for the home stretch, and Trump has the wind at his back moving into the final days. Say… where’s Hunter Biden these days?
