Barbara Bush Donated to a Democrat to Beat Ken Paxton — And Made Sure Everyone Knew It

Barbara Bush — daughter of George W. Bush, 44 years old, listed at a Brooklyn address on the filing — wrote a $2,500 check on September 23 to a PAC backing a Democrat running for Texas Senate. She didn't route it through a 501(c)(4). She didn't use a family trust. She put her name on it.

"She could have routed the money through a 501c4 and stayed completely anonymous," Fox News Politics noted. "She chose not to."

The recipient was Lone Star Rising PAC, which accounts for nearly all outside spending supporting James Talarico, the Democratic nominee challenging Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for his Senate seat. The November 3 election has turned into one of the most expensive races in the country, and the Bush family just made it personal.

This isn't a random policy disagreement. In 2022, Paxton defeated George P. Bush — Barbara's cousin — in the Republican primary for Texas attorney general. George P. ran as the establishment-approved alternative. Paxton crushed him. The Bush family doesn't forget a primary loss, and they apparently don't care which party delivers the payback.

Barbara Bush currently serves as VP of social impact and inclusion at the NBA. Her father, George W. Bush, hosted a Republican Senate fundraiser in September 2026. Paxton was notably absent from the guest list. So the former president raises money for Senate Republicans — just not the one who embarrassed his nephew. And his daughter writes a check to the Democrat running against the same guy.

The contrast on the other side of the ledger is instructive. Elon Musk has poured over $150 million into Paxton's campaign, making it one of the most heavily funded Senate bids in American history. The race has effectively become a proxy war: the richest man on the planet backing the Trump-allied attorney general, and the Bush dynasty funding the Democrat trying to unseat him.

Lone Star Rising PAC isn't a massive operation with dozens of donors diluting the signal. It's the primary vehicle for outside Democratic spending in this race. A $2,500 contribution from a Bush, publicly filed, is a statement — not a donation.

The Bush family governed Texas for decades. George H.W. Bush moved to Houston. George W. Bush was governor before he was president. The family name used to be synonymous with Texas Republican politics. Now the family name appears on an FEC filing supporting a Democrat against a Republican endorsed by Donald Trump.

George P. Bush lost to Paxton by 36 points in that 2022 primary. The voters made their preference clear. The family's response, four years later, was to fund the other party.
