Democrat Politician Arrested for a Third Time Since Taking Office

Harris County Treasurer Carla Wyatt has been arrested for the third time since taking office — this time for DWI in Galveston County — and she's still a sitting elected Democrat who is actively running for re-election. If this were a Republican, CNN would have a countdown clock.

Three arrests. Not three parking tickets. Not three stern letters from the HOA. Three arrests. For an elected official currently in charge of a county treasury. Let that marinate.

The latest incident went down on May 10, 2026, around 1:30 a.m. in Texas City, where police found the 56-year-old Wyatt asleep behind the wheel of her vehicle — engine running — parked in the left lane of Highway 3. When the officer woke her up and asked where she was, Wyatt reportedly said she was in "heaven." She then corrected herself and said "Houston," which was roughly 40 miles away. Close enough for government work, I suppose.

Wyatt told the officer she'd had "one glass of wine at dinner." Then it became "two glasses of wine." She used the rear bumper of her vehicle to keep her balance while standing and failed a field sobriety test. She was arrested for DWI and released from Galveston County jail on a $3,000 cash bond.

Her attorney, Christopher Downey, issued a statement that could've been generated by AI for how predictable it was: "We are looking forward to obtaining all of the available discovery in this case and investigating the basis for this arrest. Dr. Wyatt denies that she committed any criminal act whatsoever." She was asleep in a running car in the middle of a highway at 1:30 in the morning. But sure — no criminal act whatsoever.

This isn't even Wyatt's first DWI. She was hit with a DWI charge back in December 2023 after blowing a blood alcohol content of at least 0.15% — nearly twice the legal limit. That charge was conveniently dismissed in August 2025 after she completed a pretrial diversion program. Slap on the wrist. Back to business.

And then there's arrest number two: in December 2024, Wyatt was charged with burglary of a vehicle after multiple witnesses watched her rummaging through someone else's car in a restaurant parking lot. Her defense? Her attorney blamed "cerebrovascular disease" and a "mini-stroke." The grand jury no-billed the case in April 2026. So that one just disappeared too.

Three arrests in roughly two and a half years in office. A DWI dismissed through a diversion program. A burglary charge that evaporated. And now another DWI. The Harris County Commissioners Court saw enough — back in February 2026, they unanimously voted to strip key functions from the Treasurer's Office and began pursuing the full dissolution of the office, which would require voter approval.

But here's the kicker: Carla Wyatt is still running for re-election. She had no challengers in the Democratic primary. The Republican nominee is Marc Cowart, who at minimum has the advantage of not having been arrested three times while holding public office.

Now imagine — just imagine — if this were a Republican county treasurer with three arrests, a BAC nearly twice the legal limit, and a burglary charge. Rachel Maddow would be doing a four-part documentary. The New York Times would assign an investigative team. But it's a Texas Democrat, so the national media couldn't care less.

As reported by The Blaze, Wyatt is still in office, still on the ballot, and still apparently behind the wheel. Three strikes and you're out — unless you've got a D next to your name.
