New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter on Monday to “confront” Republicans concerned with critical race theory being taught in school, saying they should “read the books they’re trying to ban.”
Her full tweet said, “Martin Luther King, Jr was murdered for confronting white supremacy. Today GOP who are gutting the very Voting Rights Act King worked for want you to believe he’d support mass disenfranchisement and teaching of racial ignorance. They should read the books they’re trying to ban.”
Let’s take a closer look at her words. Would Martin Luther King Jr. support teaching critical race theory? It’s doubtful. King NEVER said or taught others that all white people were inherently racist. He taught that racism could be overcome through different, non-violent actions. That is why he advocated for changes in laws to improve civil rights.
But let’s also consider Ocasio-Cortez’s claim that the GOP should read the books they’re trying to ban. First, what books does she have in mind? Likely the critical race theory curriculum she is advocating. But many lawmakers are pushing back on critical race theory precisely because they have read the new curriculum and are concerned about it.
The conservative condemnation of critical race theory being taught in public schools is not about book burning. Conservatives are not the ones trying to rewrite history and tear down historic statues—the left is.
Instead, this is about teaching American children appropriate history and values. What is wrong with teaching children the facts about the nation’s history? The nation was started in 1776 when it declared its independence from Britain. Yes, slavery sadly existed, Native Americans were mistreated and women could not vote during the nation’s early history.
But also, yes, the nation has improved and Native Americans are now treated much better, slavery officially ended more than a century ago and women have been voting for a long time, including for AOC. The real history of America includes an accurate portrayal of both the unique freedoms of the country and the progress made to improve democracy for all people.
That should be sufficient. But for the left, it seems like you have to feel bad for simply being white. That sounds like racism of a different kind. In addition, the critical race theory rewrite of the past is also associated with anti-democratic governments. Do we really want to say socialism and Marxism are equally valid systems of government?
A close look at Cuba, China, North Korea or anywhere else under one of these systems should reveal a quick no. But if you listen to AOC, conservatives are the ones banning books and spewing hate.
The truth is quite different. Cuba’s recent protests showed people in the streets with American flags. Why? The flag represents freedom—a freedom Cubans long for and currently lack. America doesn’t need to become more like Cuba. Cuba needs to become more like America.
Communists are the ones banning books. Conservatives are the ones working to get the right books into the hands of America’s students.
