House Democrats have reintroduced the PRO Act, a sweeping job reform bill that would make many forms of contract and freelance employment illegal. The legislation is based on a similar law implemented in California that was so damaging that they later voted to change it. The bill could damage many of the 57 million freelance workers in America.
“The Administration strongly encourages the House to pass [the PRO Act] and looks forward to working with the Congress to enact this critical legislation that safeguards workers’ rights to organize and bargain collectively,” the White House said in a statement on Monday. “The PRO Act will strengthen our democracy and advance dignity in the workplace.”
Instead of advancing dignity, the legislation would destroy the gig economy, also known as a side hustle or freelancing. The action would only enhance labor unions who want to outlaw competition to their traditional business.
For example, when California enacted a similar law, the ride-sharing company Uber nearly shut down. Hundreds of freelance workers in music, journalism, graphic design, babysitting, and other fields were forced out of work.
Most freelancers choose the this type of employment for the flexibility it provides parents. The ability to be your own boss, work from home or from the road are also top reasons cited.
In many cases, the companies that hire freelance workers would have no option to hire freelancers on a full-time or traditional basis, leaving many of the 57 million Americans who work freelance jobs unemployed.
Freelance workers aren’t earning less either, which is what Democrats are claiming is why they want to do outlaw it. The Washington Examiner notes according to a 2019 survey, a whopping 40 percent of gig economy workers earn more than $100,000 annually, while another 35.7 percent make from $50,000 to $100,000. These are work from home startups, work from home parents, weekend second-job workers, and other hard-working Americans. The last thing they need is for a guy who can’t read a teleprompter to tell them they can’t work as they wish to make a living.
Is there any area of the economy the Biden administration can just leave alone and not mess up? Isn’t it enough that he has already destroyed the 11,000 jobs involved in the Keystone XL Pipeline, along with thousands of additional jobs related to stopping construction of the border wall?
Along with Biden’s 100-day policy goals of wearing masks and stopping deportations, Biden appears to be working toward a 100-day goal of tripling unemployment and destroying Trump’s job gains in the economy.
Perhaps what is most disturbing is that in many cases, companies could simply outsource the work internationally. It may get to the point that a freelancer would be better off moving to another country to freelance in America. Crazy!
The PRO act is anything but pro. It’s an amateur-hour act to help big labor that would destroy the entrepreneurship that makes America great.

Now those 11,000 jobs destroyed by the pipeline shut down, seems to be a multiple of the number the Dept. of Labor says was lost which including the places which make the pipe and transport the pipe was according to US Dept. of Labor about 2800 total jobs and if every 10 workers create 1 side hob that is only 280 additional jobs lost, a very small price to pay fro protecting the environment and the health of millions.
