A massive outbreak of deadly dengue fever is taking place in Brazil right now. The tropical disease, which is spread by mosquitoes, has infected and killed more people in the first five weeks of 2024 than in all of 2023. A few months ago, Brazil released billions of gene-edited mosquitoes that were provided by Bill Gates, in hopes of reducing the frequency of dengue fever. Instead of reducing the deadly disease, the exact opposite has happened.
Dengue fever is spread from person to person by mosquito bites. Mosquitoes carry the dengue virus. In most people, it causes headaches, fever, joint pain, and a nasty red rash all over the body. If it develops into severe dengue, however, it causes bleeding, blood plasma leakage, dangerously low blood pressure, and often death. Brazil had approximately 91,000 cases of dengue fever in 2023.
Here comes Bill Gates to the rescue!
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are the main ones that carry the dengue virus. We also know that there is a bacteria called Wolbachia that mosquitoes can catch. If a mosquito has the Wolbachia bacteria, it prevents the transmission of dengue fever to humans. Using his Super Smart Science Brain, Bill Gates decided that he would genetically modify billions of mosquitos that already have the Wolbachia bacteria in them, and then release those mosquitos in Brazil.
What a great idea! Because tampering with nature never has unintended consequences!
Bill Gates went into his Super Smart Science Laboratory and started cranking out billions of mosquitoes with the Wolbachia bacteria woven into their genes. Then, they transported those mosquitos into five of the most populous areas in Brazil and released them back in August. Problem solved! No more dengue fever! Hooray for science!
Except… in the first five weeks of 2024, Brazil has now had 364,855 cases of dengue fever. That includes 40 confirmed deaths and another 265 suspected deaths. Last year, dengue fever spread in the city of Brasilia at a rate of about 170 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. So far this year, it’s spreading at a rate of 1,625 cases per 100,000.
After having just 91,000 cases of dengue fever in 2023, Brazil is now on pace to have 3.6 million cases this year.
Gee, what could have caused THAT?!
Let’s come up with a scientific hypothesis.
What if there’s a difference between having a mosquito catch the Wolbachia bacteria versus weaving the Wolbachia into a mosquito’s DNA? Suppose that a genetically modified mosquito with Wolbachia woven into its system breeds with a non-Wolbachia-infected mosquito. Is it possible that the offspring of that pairing would be immune to the effects of Wolbachia?
If that happened, the Wolbachia bacteria would no longer prevent any future generations of mosquitoes from spreading dengue fever.
Oh, what do we know? We don’t have a Super Smart Science Brain like Mr. Bill Gates. We’re just a bunch of disinformation spreaders on the internet with our little “conspiracy theories.”
Now that Brazil is suffering through a catastrophic outbreak of dengue fever for some unknown reason, Bill Gates has gone back to the drawing board. Congratulations, Brazil! Bill Gates can save you!
