After initially hinting that he might be ready for retirement – Dr. Antony Fauci followed up in a recent interview to suggest he doesn’t plan on giving up power anytime soon.
Initially, Fauci toyed with the idea of stepping aside once the “pandemic phase” was over which he said might be right now.
“I have said that I would stay in what I’m doing until we get out of the pandemic phase and I think we might be there already, if we can stay in this,” Fauci said, adding, “I can’t stay at this job forever, unless my staff is gonna find me slumped over my desk one day. I’d rather not do that.”
In a more recent appearance, however, Fauci’s tone changed entirely. The Doctor sat down with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos and made it clear not to expect any changes from him any time soon.
Noting that the White House had hired Dr. Ashish Jha to replace former COVID Coordinator Jeff Zients, Stephanopoulos asked whether it was, as Fauci suggested, time for him to step aside and “get some rest.”
“You’ve said you’re going to stay in this job until we get out of the pandemic phase. You’ve served your country for decades. Are we approaching the point we’re beyond the pandemic phase and you’ll get some rest?” Stephanopoulos asked.
“I’m not so sure, George,” Fauci said, laughing. “I want to make sure we’re really out of this before I consider doing anything different. We’re still in this. We have a way to go. We’re clearly going in the right direction. I hope we stay that way.”
Making sure you don’t forget that Fauci really loves the power he wields, hinted at plans to prolong the so-called pandemic phase, saying the world should be ready for new variants.
“This virus has fooled us before, and we really must be prepared for the possibility that we might get another variant and we don’t want to be caught flatfooted on that,” Fauci said.
The tyrannical doctor also suggested that renewed COVID-19 restrictions might be forced on Americans sooner rather than later.
“If in fact, we do see a turnaround and a resurgence, we have to be able to pivot and go back to any degree of mitigation that is commensurate with what the situation is. We can’t just say, ‘We’re done. We’re going to move on.’ We’ve got to be able to be flexible because we’re dealing with a dynamic situation.”
Stephanopoulos asked Fauci about a specific new variant, “What’s your take on this BA2 variant?”
Fauci then stated that the new variant is more contagious than Omicron and used it as a chance to push the experimental vaccines.
“So the bottom line is we likely will see an uptick in cases as we’ve seen in the European countries, particularly the U.K. where they’ve had the same situation as we’ve had now; they have the BA2, they have a relaxation of some of the restrictions such as indoor masking and there’s a waning of immunity. Hopefully we won’t see a surge; I don’t think we will. The easiest way to prevent that is to continue to get people vaccinated and for those who have been vaccinated to continue to get them boosted. So that’s where we stand right now; we can expect to see an increase, yes.”
“We’ve seen this relaxation of restrictions all across the country right now. Any reason to reverse that?” Stephanopoulos asked.
“I don’t think so George, not right now,” Fauci replied, before warning that the draconian restrictions could resume whenever government health officials choose. “But you always have to have the kind of flexibility: Remember when the CDC came out with the kind of modifications of their metrics which would lead to the guidelines of what regions or counties in the country should have a masking indoor? They made it very clear that as you pull back on restrictions, if we do see a significant surge, particularly one that might result in an increase in hospitalizations, we have to be prepared to pivot and perhaps reinstitute some of those restrictions.”
Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, meanwhile, responded to Fauci’s suggestion that restrictions could be put back into play – saying “enough is enough.”
“Hell no. For petty tyrants like Fauci, they only have one tool in their toolbox: authoritarian restrictions. Enough is enough.”
