Since Democrats now want more laws and gun confiscation to stop more mass shootings, it’s worth taking a look at all the anti-gun laws that failed this past weekend.
Not that we mean to single out Highland Park completely. There were plenty of other shootings over the weekend. Those all involved non-white shooters, though, so they didn’t get any coverage. Two cops were shot in Philadelphia. 71 people were shot in Chicago. 50 people were shot in New York City. Bonus points if you can guess which political party is in control of all those cities.
Highland Park and Chicago are both governed by the state of Illinois and federal regulations when it comes to gun ownership. Check out the hoops that a person has to jump through before they can buy a gun in these places.
Before you can even walk into a gun store and touch a firearm in Illinois, you first need to apply for a Firearms Owner’s Identification (FOID) card with the Illinois State Police. The cops then run an FBI background check on you. Police then check the Illinois Department of Human Services database to make sure you haven’t been in a mental institution in the past five years. This background check process, just to get a piece of paper from the State Police, currently takes 90 days.
Once you obtain a FOID card after the 90-day delay, if you haven’t forgotten that you wanted to buy a gun during all that time, you next have to go to a local Highland Park government office. There, you have to fill out a form declaring that you’ve read and understand all of the LOCAL firearms laws.
Now that you’ve accomplished all of that, it’s finally legal for you to touch an unloaded gun with a trigger lock on it at a gun store. But only after you show your FOID card to a licensed FFL holder.
Despite having a Firearms OWNER’S Identification card, you’re not actually a gun owner yet. Oh, no. Not in Illinois. Not by a long shot!
Once you decide on a gun you’d like to buy, you have to fill out Form ATF 4473. If you’ve never filled one of those out, you should know that it requires you to list the manufacturer, model, serial number, type of gun you’re buying, its caliber, and the total number of guns you’re buying. Then you have to answer a series of 13 questions on the form, under penalty of perjury. Then the FFL has to fill in an additional two pages of data on Form ATF 4473.
Once the form is filled out, the FFL informs the Illinois State Police so they can perform a background check. They run an FBI background check on you and then check the Illinois Department of Human Services database to make sure you haven’t been in a mental institution in the past five years.
If that sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the exact same 90-day background check that you went through to get a FOID card in Highland Park. So, now you’re up to 180 days of waiting.
