Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of “The View,” generated strong backlash on Monday after telling viewers that the Holocaust “wasn’t about race.”
Her disturbing and false statements came during a discussion about “a Tennessee school board’s recent vote to remove a graphic novel about the Holocaust from an eighth grade language arts curriculum due to profanity and nudity,” according to Breitbart News.
“Let’s be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn’t about race. No, it’s not about race,” Goldberg said.
“The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, because black, white, Jews … everybody eats each other,” she later said in the segment.
Numerous celebrities quickly spoke against the inaccurate comment, including Perez Hilton and actor Michael Rappaport.
“I love Whoopi Goldberg, but this take of hers on the Nazis and the Holocaust is… not it,” Hilton said.
“YES #WhoopiGoldberg it was ALL & ONLY about RACE. Apologize!!!!” Rappaport added.
The Boston Globe’s Jeff Jacoby called Goldberg’s ignorance “scary” in a Twitter post. He also wrote, “The Nazis were obsessed with race. Over & over, they declared Jews an inferior race polluting the Aryan master race. In 1939, Hitler declared that his goal if war came would be “the annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe.”
The concerning comments and push back show that the liberal hosts of “The View” do not represent the actual views of millions of Americans. The words also reveal the startling level of ignorance among some media voices regarding the basic facts of history involving the Holocaust and World War II.
The Holocaust included the deaths of more than six million Jews by the racist, genocidal efforts of Nazi Germany. To call the actions anything less is to minimize the evil involved. Goldberg’s comments are both wrong and offensive, especially to the Jewish people.
Yesterday ABC suspended Whoopie Goldberg for 14 days over her spreading of misinformation. Many have pushed the network to fire her. Time will tell if Ms. Goldberg, who’s real name is Caryn Johnson, will be canceled like she has celebrated happening to so many others.
